Job Title: Camp Director – Hindu Heritage Youth Camp (HHYC)

Organization Overview:
Hindu Heritage Youth Camp (HHYC) has been a cornerstone for Hindu youth education for nearly 40 years. Located in Houston, TX, HHYC is committed to teaching Hindu children, ages 7-17, about their culture and religion in a fun and positive environment. With the construction of our campsite in Columbus, TX, HHYC is transitioning from a one-week, 200-person camp to a multi-week camp with increasing capacity.
Position Overview:
We are looking for a dedicated Camp Director to lead this exciting expansion and shape the future of one of the largest Hindu youth camps in the country. As the Camp Director, you will fully own camp processes. This role requires strong leadership, organizational abilities, and a passion for nurturing Hindu youth. You will work closely with the camp’s board, donors, and counselors to ensure the successful execution of the camp’s mission.
In the first year (Summer 2025), you will shadow as a Camp Counselor with plans to transition to a full-time director role in 2026. This position will require you to be on-site for the weeks of camp, and will require you to be in Houston for the majority of the summer. This role demands both summer availability and part-time commitment throughout the school year.
Key Responsibilities:
- Camp Operations & Management:
- Oversee all camp operations, logistics, and administration.
- Manage the camp registration system, ensuring smooth processing and timely communication with parents.
- Staff Recruitment & Training:
- Lead the recruitment and selection process for camp counselors, including conducting interviews and making final selections.
- Design and implement training programs for counselors, focusing on camp management and Hindu educational sessions.
- Set expectations for counselors and assign roles and schedules throughout the camp season.
- Organize and lead regular summer meetings with counselors to ensure preparations.
- Program Development & Planning:
- Create and oversee the camp schedule, ensuring a balance of educational, recreational, and spiritual activities.
- Develop engaging lesson plans on Hindu topics and work with counselors to ensure they are well-prepared to lead activities and present educational content on Hinduism.
- Camper & Parent Relations:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for parents, addressing inquiries and resolving any issues during the camp season.
- Manage and support the well-being of campers (ages 7-17), ensuring they have a safe, fun, and enriching camp experience.
- Leadership & Team Management:
- Lead a team of 50-100 counselors, ensuring they are effectively motivated, supported, and organized.
- Ensure excellent communication and collaboration between all camp staff, volunteers, and board members.
- Manage relationships within the Hindu community.
- Growth & Strategic Planning:
- Work closely with the board to establish long-term camp expansion, programming, and community engagement goals.
Qualifications:
- A strong connection to Hinduism and alignment with HHYC’s mission and values.
- Preferred candidates are between 25 and 40 years old, reflecting the experience necessary for leadership in a youth camp setting.
- Ability to engage in physical activities, including supervising campers as well as walking around the campsite
- Experience in education, youth programs, or camp management.
- Proven leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to lead a large team.
- Availability to work full-time during the summer and be present during all camp sessions.
Compensation:
The first year will be as a volunteer Camp Counselor shadowing the current directors. Beginning in 2026, the role will transition to a paid position, with compensation commensurate with experience.
